For The Examiner | Known around the world as simply “Cake Boy,” Chef Eric Lanlard has earned his way into a very elite group of the best pastry chefs in the world. It’s not only his amazing talents in the kitchen, but also his approachability and humility that has brought him so much success through his cookbooks, shop, television and other partnerships. With the launch of the Cake-Boy App on November 14, 2013, I was fortunate to get a few minutes with Chef Eric to learn a little more about this much-anticipated App.
With 80 recipes, the App is broken down into six categories, including Basics and Pastries, Cakes, Cheesecakes, Tarts, Cupcakes and Desserts. With gluten free recipes and all the social media connectivity you’ll ever need, this App is distinctively Chef Eric through and through, and I mean this in the best of ways. It’s easy to navigate, while also being bright and exciting with a hint of flamboyance. It is after all, this energy, creativity and overall genius with pastry that has made him one of the most sought after chefs today.
With so many successful ventures, what was the inspiration behind developing this App? Chef Eric says, “Since I started training and throughout my professional life, I’ve always been surrounded by amazing chefs willing to share their passion for baking with me. It’s now my time! I do the same with my chefs, and with the students in our Cake-Boy Academy, but as my business inquiries, programs and books become more global, I thought it was a great time to do the App.” Another feature I noticed immediately was the conversion, so even bakers (or bakers in training) in the U.S. can easily follow along with the recipes. “The other reason was that many of the Apps are too regional and it’s frustrating without the convenience of worldwide measurement conversions. I love this feature,” says Chef Eric.
Evaluating what drives his ability to maintain his level of creativity, Chef Eric says, “I have been baking professionally for almost 25 years now, and for many years before that as a kid. I’m constantly inspired by my love of the ingredients, the reward of baking, new techniques, new ingredients, but mostly for me it’s the ability to travel. When I am relaxed, my creative brain becomes excited.” Of course, this is when he is not baking on television, publishing his books or preparing amazing desserts and one-of-a-kind cakes for his A-List clients, including Madonna, Guy Ritchie, David and Victoria Beckham, Elizabeth Hurley, Claudia Schiffer and even found time to make the infamous cake surrounded by roses with two miniature corgi dogs wearing tiaras for the 101st birthday cake of the late Queen Mother.
“For my part I wanted to be accessible like my TV shows and books; providing proper tips and recipes for bakers of all levels, while also giving them the ability to bake something even if it’s last minute. With this particular feature, you can enter the ingredients you have in your cupboard and refrigerator, and the App will find the possible recipes for you to use what you have available,” says Chef Eric. This is actually one of my favorite features to the App, as it’s another way he is able to bring baking with his amazing recipes to the masses. This combined with a hands-free option to maneuver through the App while your hands are busy mixing and preparing your cake and the timer options on your phone with the opportunity to share on social media either your own photo (or the photo from Chef Eric’s masterpiece) make for an App that’s very interactive and enjoyable to use. For those of us not able to visit The Café at Cake Boy in London on a regular basis, we now have the ability to interact and bake with Chef Eric in our own homes.
